It was the early '90s, the height of the AIDS epidemic and I was newly single and very unsure of myself in the worl of dating men and especially in the world of AIDS.

I was not only playing "safe", but I really wanted to have what I'd lost--a home and family, but this time included it needed to be with a man. My dating became more like an interview process.

My father was the opposite. He was fine with me being gay and happy being single. He'd been married twice and now loved the freedom of dating. When the lady he was seeing wasn't what he wanted, he left and found someone that was. It was so simple, He couldn't understand why anyone would make it so complicated (like me).

After a few years, I began to understand what he was. talking about and had lots of short and very shot relationships. My confidence improved and life was getting much better.

Then my father, without warning at the age of 64 said to me, "guess what, I'm getting married." I nearly fell over.

I finally understood what he'd been trying to teach me. Of course I asked him why. He stopped, seemed to give me the perplexed look I'd seen often before and saiid, "I'm old enough to know when I'm in love."

That was it. It was that simple. He found the right person and it was the right time. The answer was obvious.

The song wrote itself and I had my niece sing it to him at his wedding. "I'm Old Enough To Know" it's love.

It's my father's song, pure and simple. It's the way love is for him. It's simple and he knows it when he sees it and doesn't question it when he's in it.

Lyrics

In my life, I’ve walked with so many strangers, so many
friends, even lovers have come my way. Most are memories
and images I remember, filled with hopes and
disappointments along the way.

You see I’ve found someone, I can take the journey with.
A soulmate though the words has been abused. We laugh like
kids and rush to speak each and everyday, and I think of her
far too much when she’s away.

Chorus:
And I’m old enough to know what I’m looking for. I’ve
played the game long enough to spot a win. And if time is
so kind, to bring your soul to me, then thank God I’m old
enough to know it’s love.

My friends say it’s infatuation, a simple passion that will
soon begin to fade, but you’re my best friend and life long
partner, you are, and I’m old enough to know when it’s love.

I’m old enough to know what I’m looking for. I’ve
played the game long enough to spot a win. And if time
is so kind, to bring your soul to me, then thank God I’m
old enough to know it’s love.

Bridge:
I’m not chasing rainbows and this is not another one night
stand. It’s different, it’s something beautiful that will take
me to the end.
Call it intuition, or maybe it’s a sense of smell, a signal from
heaven or maybe providence from Hell, I know, I know, I
know, I know….when it’s love.

In my life, I’ve walked with so many strangers, so many
friends, even lovers have come my way. So I look to the
sky and to heaven and to the twinkling stars up above and
thank God that I know when it’s love.
I’m old enough to know what I’m looking for. I’ve
played the game long enough to spot a win. And if time
is so kind, to bring your soul to me, thank God I’m old
enough to know it’s love. So If time is so kind to bring your
soul to me, then thank God I’m old enough to know it’s
Love
